So maligned, so unknown
Quite remarkable and alien
Unlike so many it stands o'er
Its roots strong and erecting
A bulb sweet and white within
Efficient, edible cooked or not
Its greens a boone as well
And lasts winter's mild span
A provider in the lean times
When the earth sleeps long
And her abundance rests still
A humble bounty to survive
When verdant patches lie below
The stinging cold just above
Frigid fingers find fare
Staying off famine's grip
