Rabenballade [English translation]

I go through Moorland alone,

There I hear three birds crying,

Up a tree three proud ravens,

Were as black as ebony.

The one said "My companion,

Where should the next dine be?"

"To a fight, on the green field,

Lies there an amazed hero."

But at the site his dog vigil,

The loyal wait there hour around hour.

And moving in circles in the sky,

His loyal hawks above him.

Also his darling is coming,

She has followed the crying hawks,

But deep in the moor in sunset,

Is the noble hero long since dead.

And again lies a loyal man in the moor,

A man who lost everything without reason,

A new tomb for an old war,

For the beggar of fame and heroic victory.

For the short anger of a knight,

The high castle once mused to revenge,

For a king, even he did not know,

He is now dead in a distant land.
