The colourful uniforms
Red banners fluttering
Military marches blaring
Troops amassed display
Formations in waves pass
Symbols of might and power
Intimidation made grand
For those near and afar
Cold war, foreign foes
Obscuring those near
No one has a choice yet
Each with a painted face
Like the clowns disguising
The true sadness beneath
Misery's dear companion
The Soviet Union was not
There was no council fair
For those of freewill unkept
But the council of the gulag
Forced forgotten by history
A miserable union perhaps
When everything is short
With long lines, little to get
People here might disappear
And yet there is still misery
The masses learn to distrust
Their fixed fear used to control
Leaders use the worst in men
To achieve their ambitions
The selfish never see light
The young see only glory
Pomp and circumstance so
Blind and misguided alike
Those who lived as sheep do
Awaiting a tyrant's slaughter
Where are the intelligencia
They once graced Russia so
With great ideals, expectations
That froze to death in Siberia
Those frontiers of forced labour
The hope is in the future
Where freedom is learned
So men would live in peace
A government taught then
Hatred is an evil precipice
Those lessons once taught
They remain a legacy still
That must be outgrown yet
Self survival overwhelming
That forsakes true fellowship
