Eons ago the sea was still
With no life in its somber stillness
Each day it would consult the sun
As to its unknown meaning
The sun was wise and told the sea
Be still, and keep to yourself
Be at peace with the land
But the sea heard not
One night while the sun rested
The sea asked the moon
To creep upon the land
In selfish greed
The moon pulled wildly
Upon the sea's strong arm
And it smashed upon the rocks
Cracking and smashing many of them
The next morning when the sun awoke
It looked upon the land
And found that the sea crept
Far beyond its limit
The sun was furious and exclaimed
"No more shall the sea sleep
In its peaceful bounds"
No more in silent slumber
"Now and forever you shall beat
Upon the land without pause
The moon shall bear the load
To bring you up each day
The land shall quell you
And you will toil within yourself
The moon will aid and guide you
Through darkest night
So to this day and beyond
The sea has not quelled
And the land has kept it back
The moon's tidal forces, eternal
