Although he has been gone long ago
I still remember his gaping smile
Happy dog breath and panting so
A goof so gentle in his pack
A terror to those seen strange
Hanging out of the car
Oh so far, wind in his face
And occasionally he would fall out
If it stopped too abruptly
Again taking all in stride
Canned food on Sunday,
Ice cream on his birthday
As if he knew the days
Food so routine for him
As digging or chasing his tail
Howling like a baining wolf
When the neighbor dogs were in heat
Enduring a rolled up newspaper
Such disgrace for instincts
No justice for a wishful bachelor
And torturous tin-tubbed baths
Soap and water, it was inhumane?
As though the grass were relief
An air freshner, a towel of whim
Oh, the glory to be dirty again
Brought opossums home to share
They didn't stay for the hosts
Such an inamiable toothy shame
They were so very inhospitable
On being abruptly invited
Skunks too dubbed him
He thought it a grand celebration
But none would come near
Slow learner, a tomato juice deluge
And that torturous bath
Mutually gotten, sharing all
On occasion poisonous snakes
Wild ducks, plucked and prepped
Shares for man and beast
A wildlife varied feast
Wild game buffet unscheduled
Never to venture entry's edge
Beyond front two paws within
Into the dwelling forbidden
And entice matriarchal rage
Exiting, tail between the legs
His demise, an unyielding truck
Not concerned with a canine's plight
Uneducated in traffic's etiquette
Unable to stop in time, alas
Destiny found him in ignorance
A few last breaths, tears streaming
In mortal torment, so much pain
An unfair end, a deemed mitigation
A few last moments held near
With my best friend
